The Revitalization of the Brookville Nature Park
After years of languishing, being assaulted by any number of hurricanes, blizzards and other acts of nature, Brookville’s 22.51 acre nature park, located at 195 Brookville Road, has started a major rehabilitation effort that will take a number of years to complete. But the efforts will be worth it as it provides more accessibility to residents, local school children, equestrians and others who wish to enjoy this passive parkland. Former home to a Nike Missile Site, we acquired the land through the Federal Lands to Parks Program of the U.S.
Department of the Interior. We did not have to pay for the land but there were a number of stipulations tied to the transfer. Clean up was one of them!
So we were absolutely delighted when nearly a dozen students and their two chaperones from the Lutheran High School turned out recently to help Village Crew, Mayor Serota and Trustees start the official spring clean up. Work began over at the corral which is totally overgrown with scrub brush, vines, trees and poison ivy. Students donned protective gloves, and grabbed rakes, pruning shears and shovels. By the time they left, we could already see the rewards of their efforts. Thank you Lu-Hi for partnering with Brookville!
Much more work is slated and special thanks to Trustee Rob Antonnucci for his hands on efforts to keep estimating and executing projects on time and on target. Next up: water and electric will be brought, an irrigation system will be installed, flower beds will be planted, rotted fencing, will be replaced, trees added and a flag pole put in. To help defray costs, we are applying for two government grants. Work will continue all summer.
